Options Strategy Guide
Long Strangle
Like a straddle, but cheaper — and needs a bigger move.
Intermediate
Volatile — expects a large move either way
Defined risk (lower than straddle), needs larger move to profit
The Simple Version
Plain English — no jargon
Same idea as a straddle — you bet on a big move either way. But instead of buying tickets at exactly today's price, you buy a slightly cheaper 'up' ticket and a slightly cheaper 'down' ticket. Each one costs less, but the stock needs to move even further before you profit. Lower cost, higher bar.
How It Works — Step by Step
- 1 Buy an OTM call option (above current price)
- 2 Buy an OTM put option (below current price)
- 3 Pay less premium than a straddle — but need a larger move to profit
- 4 Profit if stock moves far enough beyond either breakeven point
- 5 Upper breakeven = call strike + total premium; Lower breakeven = put strike - total premium

When to Use It — and When Not To
✓ Use when
- Before a known catalyst where you expect a large move
- When IV is moderate and you want cheaper exposure than a straddle
- When you want to define a wider profit zone
✗ Avoid when
- IV is already elevated — you are overpaying for the wings
- The stock is unlikely to make a large enough move
- After an earnings event — IV crush will hurt both legs
Greeks & Mechanics (for the experienced trader)
Delta
Near zero — moves in either direction contribute to profit once breakeven is exceeded.
Theta
Negative — time decay erodes both option values daily.
Vega
Positive — benefits from rising IV before the catalyst.
Gamma
Positive — large moves increase position value rapidly.
Key Risks
- Needs a bigger move than a straddle to profit
- Both options can expire worthless if the stock stays in the middle
- IV crush after events is devastating — even with a move the position can lose
