Options Strategy Guide
Iron Butterfly
Maximum credit when the stock lands exactly where you expect.
Intermediate
Neutral — expects stock to stay near current price
Defined risk, higher premium than iron condor, narrower profit zone
The Simple Version
Plain English — no jargon
Think of a bullseye target. An iron condor gives you points for hitting anywhere in a wide ring. An iron butterfly gives you more points — but only if you hit close to the center. Higher reward, tighter target. You collect more premium, but the stock needs to barely move.
How It Works — Step by Step
- 1 Sell an at-the-money (ATM) call and ATM put at the same strike — collect maximum premium
- 2 Buy an OTM call above — caps upside risk
- 3 Buy an OTM put below — caps downside risk
- 4 Maximum profit if stock closes exactly at the short strike at expiration
- 5 Loses money as stock moves away from center in either direction

When to Use It — and When Not To
✓ Use when
- You expect very low volatility and the stock to pin near a specific price
- IV rank is very high — selling expensive ATM premium
- Around event-driven situations where you predict the outcome accurately
✗ Avoid when
- You are unsure where the stock will land — iron condor is better
- IV is low — not enough premium
- The stock trends strongly in any direction
Greeks & Mechanics (for the experienced trader)
Delta
Near zero at initiation — neutral by design.
Theta
Very positive — ATM options decay fastest, and you sold two of them.
Vega
Very negative — you sold ATM options which are most sensitive to IV changes.
Gamma
Very negative near expiration — the position can swing rapidly.
Key Risks
- Narrow profit zone — even a small move away from center reduces profit significantly
- High negative gamma near expiration — losses accelerate if stock moves
- Difficult to adjust mid-trade
