Understanding Treasury Bonds

What Are Treasury Bonds?

US Treasury securities are debt obligations issued by the US Department of the Treasury, backed by the full faith and credit of the US government — considered the world's safest investment.

Maturity Categories

  • Short-term (<1yr): T-Bills — highest liquidity, lowest risk
  • Medium-term (1–7yr): T-Notes — balance of yield and stability
  • Long-term (10yr+): T-Bonds — highest yield, more price volatility

Yield Curve Shapes

  • Normal: Long rates higher than short (healthy economy)
  • Flat: Little difference between maturities (uncertainty)
  • Inverted: Short rates higher than long (recession warning)
  • Steep: Large spread between short and long rates

2Y–10Y Slope

The most watched yield curve indicator. A negative (inverted) slope has historically preceded recessions by 6–18 months. A positive slope signals normal economic conditions.

Why Rates Matter

  • Mortgages: Follow the 10-year rate closely
  • Stocks: Higher rates = lower valuations
  • Corporate bonds: Treasury rate + credit spread
  • Fed policy: Short-term rates set by the Federal Reserve

Investment Strategies

  • Laddering: Staggered maturities to manage reinvestment risk
  • Barbells: Short + long maturities, skip intermediate
  • Flight to safety: During market stress, prices rise (yields fall)
  • TIPS: Inflation-protected Treasury securities
